Answer: Annie Leonard defines the system of ‘materials economy’ in a five stage process: extraction to production to distribution to consumption to disposal. The system affects people’s health, environment and the government.
She spends ten years researching where and how the stuff comes and goes. Each stage is described effectively; identifying the impact it has on our planet and the people.
She describes how each stage interacts by allowing us to be able to visualize what she is saying. By being able to visualize the picture, you are able to understand better what each stage does. She makes well use of the statistics she researched to make her article more credible.
Question 2: Define extraction, production, distribution, consumption and disposal. (One paragraph for each term). Answer: Extraction: This is the beginning of the ‘material economy.’ Extraction, as Annie defines it, basically means taking up Earth’s resource, such as water, trees, animals, etc.
Production: In this stage, we use energy to mix toxic chemicals in with the natural resources to make toxic contaminated products. The more toxic we put in our products, the more toxic we bring home, school, etc (from the stuff we buy).
Distribution: Just as the name sounds, distribution is basically selling the toxic contaminated products quickly as possible by keeping the prices low.
Consumption: This stage describes the consumer’s spending patterns. We live in a society where we consume goods constantly
Disposal: The last stage describes what happens to the product once we don’t want them. It gets disposed, polluting the air, water, land and the climate. Although we can recycle but it’s not enough – much of the garbage can’t be recycled because it contains toxic. (2 paragraphs) Answer: The flash presentation effectively organizes the categories by having a creative interface design. The video demonstrates the five stages of ‘material economy’ effectively. It keeps the viewer’s attention. It is also easy to see how each stage works. As she describes each action, I found it effective that the animation comes up and shows what she’s talking about visually. The animations are in black and white so it’s easier to see that she stands out just as much as the animation. For each stage, she has placed a navigation bar which allows you to click on the other stages and get to that particular chapter. The chapter you are viewing is also highlighted to notify the viewer of which chapter they are viewing.
